Differentiation for The Giver Unit Plan: K.S.A. #9, #11
There are a variety of students at different levels of comprehension and reading abilities in the classes I will be teaching. Therefore, it is necessary to differentiate the unit as follows:
1. I will be using a variety of activities to enable students to fully integrate their learning. Students will be:
• Working with partners, groups and on their own to complete tasks
• Working with computers to research, write and create essays and a power point presentation.
• Learning from visual as well as audio sources.
• Have all their instructions written out for them in the form of accessible and comprehensive hand-outs
• Responding to questions designed to stimulate higher thinking as well as basic understanding
2. The rubric for the power point presentation can be easily modified to fit the ability of students who are struggling to express themselves in written or typed form.
3. Groupings and pairings will be contingent upon a) how well students work together and b) how well they compliment each other’s skills and abilities. These pairings and groupings will change frequently, depending on the activity and what it requires.
4. The persuasive essay the students will write is based on a R.A.F.T.. Each category in the R.A.F.T. will be tailored to the needs of certain groups. For this activity, the students will initially work in small groups in order to brainstorm their ideas and create their outlines and drafts. They will then work independently to type out their essays. Students will also work together to peer-assess each other’s work. This assessment will be based on a checklist of criteria set out by the teacher so that there is no questions about what is expected.
5. The Diamante poem is designed to be fun and to include audio, visual and kinesthetic learning methods. The Wordle is also intended to utilize all three methods.
6. I will be modifying the test slightly for some of the students. These modifications will not be obvious to anyone at a glance. The students will come in on test day and find their test waiting for them on their desks. The test will be based on multiple choice, mix and match, and short answers.
