While we read The Giver aloud as a class, students were given the option of either following along in their novels, or drawing what they were hearing. This strategy was effective to keep students engaged in the story. While I did ask for volunteers to read sections of the novel, there were some students who were not strong readers, or who were not comfortable in reading aloud in front of the class.
